Another day, another mistake by the vancouver police department. Two plain clothes officers showed up at the door of a suspect and when an Asian man answered, they pulled the man out to give him a nice beating before they realized, uh oh, they had the wrong dude! With a few different stories floating around after the fact, the VPD announced they’ll do an internal investigation into the matter. While the media is mostly using kid gloves on the matter, there is quite a bit of anger in the community over the mishap – and worse the discrepancy in the stories by the VPD. Another cover up? Another cop gets off with a wrist slap?
Further to the story, the BC Civil Liberties Assoc. has called on VPD to ask an external agency to investigate the beating – rather than an internal investigation. When we can’t trust the police to police themselves, how can the community trust the police at all? Accountability runs thin with this force.
