Conan O’brien is now off the NBC air waves, and after a whirlwind pair of weeks, he left with a bang. Amazingly, his ratings skyrocketed and online social manifestations took life. Facebook’s “I’m with Coco” has over 750,000 fans. A true indicator that social media is taking some traction as brand success indicators. Nielsen ratings, while still effective, are one dimensional – you either watch or don’t… but facebook fan groups are opening up a dialogue between ‘fans’ and products. People fanning the I’m with Coco cause are not worried that Conan will need support in this very sad time for him… after all he has $30M to cope, but they are sending a message, loud and clear, that TV executives don’t have crystal balls and cannot dictate what viewership wants. Let this be a lesson to NBC and all those other networks – that if you do not listen, you will lose more and more viewers, sponsors and talent like Coco.
